Dental Anxiety: Comfort with Dental Sedation

Do you or your child experience anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist? If so, avoiding these essential appointments might jeopardize your dental health, leading to more extensive dental work later on. Instead of steering clear of these crucial visits, we suggest collaborating with us to discover ways to make you feel safe and comfortable at the dentist.

Dental anxiety can stem from various reasons, such as past dental trauma, negative experiences with other practitioners, claustrophobia, or sensory processing disorders – and we understand them all. While we can’t change the past, we can certainly partner with you to build your confidence and enhance your comfort during dental visits.

Addressing dental anxiety starts with recognizing that it’s a common concern, and you’re not alone! Sharing your concerns with your dentist and feeling heard and validated can significantly reduce your discomfort. Building a strong rapport between you and your dentist provides the best opportunity to make your visit a positive one.

We recommend personalizing your experience by bringing comforting items from home – teddy bears for children, blankets, or headphones can help ease you into the process. Engaging in deep breathing exercises can be beneficial to alleviate pre-procedure jitters, and our assistants are always available to hold your hand and provide reassurance throughout the process.

Nervous About Sedation?

While most of our patients do not require sedation at the dentist, there is no shame in seeking it for those who do. Sedation not only helps anxious patients to relax, but it also shortens procedure times and improves outcomes. The dentist can access all areas of the mouth easily, and movement is kept to a minimum, allowing for precision in intricate procedures. We take a compassionate approach to sedation and encourage our patients to consider it when anxiety is burdensome. At our clinic, we offer two forms of mild sedation: oral sedation and laughing gas.

Oral Sedation for Dental Anxiety

Oral sedation is administered in pill form using a specialized medication called a benzodiazepine. Patients typically take the medication prior to their procedure, as it has an onset of approximately one hour. It is crucial not to drive or travel alone when using oral sedation, as these medications can be disorienting. The medication acts as a Central Nervous System (CNS) suppressant, calming an anxious nervous system and promoting a sense of ease.

CNS suppressants also have a hypnotic effect, inducing drowsiness and possessing muscle relaxant properties, alleviating tension headaches after the procedure. If you are unable to take time away from driving or need to return to professional responsibilities that demand clear cognition, another sedation option, such as laughing gas, may be more suitable.

Personalized Sedation Options for Dental Comfort

We recognize that dentistry is a necessary but uncomfortable experience for some individuals. Various factors such as bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, and a sense of helplessness can contribute to discomfort. While we prefer natural calming methods, we acknowledge that persistent jitters may require additional assistance. In such cases, we may recommend a mild sedative to help alleviate anxiety. Our options include oral sedation in the form of a benzodiazepine dose, or for those who prefer a shorter-acting anti-anxiety approach, we offer nitrous oxide.

Commonly known as ‘laughing gas,’ nitrous oxide is mixed with air and administered to the patient through an oxygen mask placed over the nose and mouth. Nitrous oxide is a preferred choice for many due to its re-dosing capability (patients can re-dose by taking several breaths through the mask) and its short-acting properties (effects dissipate within minutes, leaving the patient with no side effects or drowsiness, ready to resume their day). Whatever your family’s needs, we are here to provide personalized support. If you have questions about these or other services offered by our general dentist, contact our clinic today!
