Does Invisalign® work for everyone?

Invisalign® therapy is the newest, easiest and most discrete way to straighten your teeth in Fort Saskatchewan! If you’ve been putting off braces because of their appearance and discomfort, you need to hear this. Now, you can improve your oral health and straighten your teeth without needing anyone else to know.

Invisalign® is a game-changing orthodontic appliance that uses custom clear aligners to correct tooth alignment. The clear aligners are worn over the top and bottom arches of the mouth and changed every 2 weeks or at the dentist’s discretion. Each new aligner in the succession is made to exert gentle but consistent pressure on the teeth in order to coax them into alignment.

Not only is Invisalign® invisible at a distance due to its snug fit around the teeth combined with its transparent profile, but with Invisalign® you will never need to see the orthodontist for an adjustment! Cases of severely misaligned teeth still require traditional braces, due to their increased ability to correct complex malocclusion (poor alignment). There are still some things that are not corrected by Invisalign®, but patients with mild to moderate crowding or misalignment are typically good candidates for Invisalign®.

Traditional braces continue to be the preferred choice for treating severe misalignments due to their superior effectiveness in addressing complex orthodontic issues.

While Invisalign® may not be suitable for every orthodontic concern, it remains a promising option for patients with mild to moderate crooked teeth or misalignment.

Who is not a Candidate for Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is typically not recommended for children or teenagers until they have lost all of their primary teeth and can adhere to the strict regimen necessary for successful treatment.

Furthermore, individuals with teeth implants, dental bridges, or TMJ disorder may not be suitable candidates for Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign may not be suitable for those with severe overcrowding, active gum disease, extensive cavities, poor oral hygiene, and individuals who are unable to consistently wear the aligners as instructed.

Care and Maintenance Guidelines for Invisalign Therapy

Your dentist will provide you with detailed instructions on caring for and wearing your custom aligners. You will be provided with a series of twenty to thirty full sets of aligners, each to be worn sequentially. It is crucial not to discard the last pair worn in case of any issues with the current set. In such cases, you would revert to the previous or next set, depending on the number of days into the new aligner.

To ensure the success of your treatment, it is essential to maintain your aligners and establish routines. Aligners must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day and should only be removed for eating or teeth cleaning. Due to their snug fit, it is important to keep the aligners clean at all times to prevent the trapping of acids and debris, as natural salivary rinsing may be less effective.

It is advisable to brush and floss your teeth after each meal, and it’s recommended not to consume carbonated water or sodas while wearing the aligners. However, still water can be consumed freely with the aligners in place.

Many patients experience an improvement in their overall oral health after completing Invisalign® therapy. This is attributed to the inconvenience of snacking due to frequent brushing and the reduction in the consumption of empty calories, such as sugary sodas, which often becomes a meal-time only activity during the treatment period. Since the duration of treatment can range from 12 to 18 months, the healthy habits fostered while wearing Invisalign become ingrained and automatic.

What happens after a course of Invisalign®?

Once your dentist confirms that your teeth are correctly aligned, you will be provided with a retainer to wear at night. Your dentist will give you detailed wear instructions specifying how often to wear the retainer. If small resin dots are applied to your teeth to help secure the aligners, your dentist will remove the dots and smooth the tooth surface.

Maintaining your new smile and healthy eating and drinking habits is crucial for long-term success. With proper care and nutrition, your transformed smile can be a permanent asset. Say goodbye to hiding your smile as you complete your Invisalign® therapy with newfound confidence.
